PERFORMING ARTS & CULTURAL CENTERS
CASE STUDY: Center for the Arts
CLIENT LOCATION: Bel Air, MD
CLIENT WEBSITE: www.centerfortheartsharford.com
PRE THUD: The Center for the Arts is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a home for the arts in Harford County, Maryland. Incorporated in March 2005 as the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, Inc., the Center for the Arts was granted 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status in November 2005. The goal of the organization is to Build the Building – a facility that includes classrooms, arts studios, dance studios, rehearsal spaces, performance spaces, and gallery exhibit spaces, as well as state-of-the-art technical and support spaces – for music, dance, theater, literary and visual arts pursuits. Since the founding of the Center for the Arts, efforts have focused on building consensus among the local arts organizations, working with the community to define existing and future cultural needs, and working in concert with the Harford County Cultural Arts Board to facilitate the preparation of a Cultural Plan for Harford County and a Feasibility Study for the Construction and Operation of a Center for the Arts in Harford County.
The Center for the Arts came to THUD with a small budget and a vision. With them already being aware of our role in the Performing Arts arena, they were excited for the opportunity to work with us. After several meetings, THUD put together a comprehensive package of services that would facilitate them to reach their vision. With their budget in mind, we built them a scalable model that would allow them to ramp up using basic versions of our "modules", that could be enhanced over time.
POST THUD: Knowing that The Center for the Arts is going to be a major player in their region's Performing Arts arena, we comprehend what their site would need to do immediately. Keeping their budget in mind, we strategized an aggressive initial presence for them. Below is a list of services The Center for the Arts utilized for their initial launch and first year of being on the Internet.
Site Design & Programming: We prepared two custom comps for The Center for the Arts, utilizing their logo and color scheme. After 2 rounds of small edits, what you see here is what was approved for launch. One key feature was adding different header images for each section of the site, a section being defined as an area for each of the main navigation links. As a user navigates through the site, they experience a consistent look and feel, with a subtle change in the header image. All of the main navigation and sub-navigation utilize rollover features to ensure the user knows they are on a link. As with every site we build, Basic Search Engine Optimization is standard protocol, as well as W3C compliance.
Basic Calendar Module: The Basic Calendar Module allows The Center for the Arts to promote their Events in its simplest form. We built a secure Administration area for specified users to enter information for an Event, in a basic data entry environment. This module allows the user to view all of the Events with sorting functionality in a summarized view, view the details of any particular Event, edit any of the information associated with an desisting Event, add new Events and delete Events. On the front end, when a user is viewing the Calendar page, Events are listed in chronological order and linked to a PDF document with all of the specifics for that particular Event.
Content Management System: The Content Management System (CMS) is a user friendly environment that a specified user must login to in order to utilize. THUD's CMS allows users to update copy, or content, on any page of their web site that has been setup to do so. This includes adding/editing images, PDF documents, MS Office documents and much more. If you can use the basic features of MS Word, then our CMS will be a piece of cake!
